Modern craft:

Minecraft is a game primarily based around the idea that humans will go into any pristine wildnerness and start building car parks. It is a game that thoroughly embraces the creative human spirit, as well as its destructive tendencies too.

The problem with many Minecraft texture packs, and indeed, the default Minecraft textures is the fact that they rather trap the player into building sometime in the Middle Ages. There's cobblestone and treasure chests and wooden torches and all in all one could be forgiven for thinking that this game was developed in 1610, not 2010.

ModernCraft is a texture pack that updates Minecraft to modern times. It's a nice, sleek texture pack that really transforms the game entirely. No longer does the player find themselves wandering through an untamed wilderness, no, instead one finds that the lawns are neatly mowed, that mining stone creates cinderblock, not cobblestone and 'red stone' has become a much more conductive copper wire.

The changes go on from there, with each one being more wondrous than the last.

Lightstone (or glowstone, if you're using the correct terminology) has been transformed into a white glowing block rather reminiscent of those glowing in ground lights you'll see in popular outdoor malls. Words cannot begin to describe how much I love these. The creator of ModernCraft has a better descriptive term for them still, 'Flourescents.'

EldPack, Old school RPG pack:
Cool textures that are amazing (Download now) 4444500_f520
If you're an old school gamer, then you're probably not too bothered by Minecraft's default graphics, at least, not because they're not good enough. If anything, Minecraft's default texture pack is too newfangled and bright for you. You miss the days when 'brown' was a valid palette for developing a game. You miss the days when 'shading' meant chunky pixels placed just right.

Fans of an older, more genteel gaming style are going to fall in love with EldPack, a Minecraft texture pack that puts one firmly back in the 80's, when gaming was good and somebody else paid the rent. (Seriously, I don't know if we'd have all been so jazzed about the prospect of growing up if someone had mentioned that 'rent' thing a few times.)

In spite of being 'old' in style, EldPack has made some significant improvements on the base texture pack. The inventory screen in particular seems much more clear and streamlined, almost steampunk in its execution.

Environmental changes are fairly subtle with EldPack, mostly the graphics appear smoother, more friendly. The greatest difference in EldPack to my mind comes in the building blocks, where a great deal of work has made blocks like cobblestone and even sandstone more visually appealing.

Tools have been re-skinned, which might take a little bit of getting used to, especially as some of them have slightly different shapes than the ones in the default texture pack. It took me a moment or two to make sure that I wasn't hacking away at cobblestone with an axe, for instance.

The entire pack has a distinctly Mideval feel to it, and nowhere does this show more than in the armor skins. Gold armor will see you wearing a crown, as if you are a king, iron armor will have you dressed as a valiant knight and leather armor makes you look like a plucky peasant setting off on his or her journey of destiny. Diamond makes you some form of uber warrior, perhaps a villain, perhaps a supernatural beast. You decide.

EldPack isn't going to be your friend if you don't like a brown, earthy feel to your game, and it's not going to be your friend if you don't have a healthy nostalgic yearning for 80's games. However let's face it, most Minecrafters would be wearing hot pink legwarmers if they could get away with it. You're gunna love this pack.

Sinecraft Simple Minecraft Pack:
Cool textures that are amazing (Download now) 4698580_f520
The aim of Sinecraft was to create a simple texture pack in which every block was still distinguishable. It was a lofty aim, right up there with
creating an Eiffel Tower that isn't too pointy and an ocean that isn't too wet. Oh how I make myself lol.

Anyway, I downloaded and tested Sinecraft and now I'm going to tell you about my observations so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not it is worth downloading the pack and installing it and then playing it yourself. Because that's how I roll.

The first thing I noticed about Sinecraft was that it was pleasantly blocky. The original Minecraft textures are fairly blocky themselves, but this was a new kind of blockiness, a smooth, bordered blockiness that would probably have a martini on Wednesdays.

Cobblestone looks awesome in this texture pack. In fact, the whole thing has a sort of muted Lego appeal, which I enjoyed immensely. All in all, construction textures are very well done. The wood textures reminded me very strongly of a plastic toy that I haven't seen or played with in years (which makes sense because now I am an adult I play with toys on the big plastic box full of circuits, not on the carpet, that would be juvenile.)

These textures are so evocative that I can almost smell them. You know the smell, the fresh plastic smell. If you licked them they would be smooth with just a hint of chemical bath aftertaste.

Glowstone is particularly nice I think, it has a lovely stained glass appeal that works well in most glowstone applications, which are, lets face it, all about the lighting. The original glowstone texture is far too 'raised in the Nether' for my liking and never goes well in my soiree rooms.

Glass isn't too bad, though if you're not using it as a window, you're out of luck as usual. It is framed, but in the case of this texture pack the frame actually makes some kind of sense.

This is actually one of my favorite 16 x 16 texture packs. A lot of these simple texture packs get carried away with simplicity and make everything seem bland and boring and dull. This texture pack, on the other hand, imparts a great deal of character.

Terrain textures take a little bit more getting used to. Blocky grass is an interesting effect, as is blocky sand. They work though, in the context of the texture pack. The only texture I was disappointed with was smoothstone, because it looked less impressive than cobblestone, which messes you up if you designed with the base texture pack in mind, in which smoothstone is far prettier than cobblestone.

Oh, and if you are submitting textures must be "16x16" only. Make another topic if you want to link all sizes that are higher.
